When buying a 100 kVA Weichai-powered diesel generator, should you compare power, configuration or price first? For backup or regular power supply, the key is matching the generator to the actual loads, site electrical requirements and operating hours. This guide explains the kVA-to-kW conversion, silent versus open-frame configurations and the information needed for a useful quotation.
- How many kW is a 100 kVA generator?
At a rated power factor of 0.8: 100 kVA × 0.8 = 80 kW. You may therefore see both “100 kVA diesel generator” and “80 kW diesel generator”. Check the rated power factor and power-rating category, and confirm whether the quoted 100 kVA is prime power. An 80 kW rating does not mean every combination of equipment totalling 80 kW can be connected directly. Starting methods, simultaneous operation and site conditions also affect sizing.
- What equipment can a 100 kVA Weichai generator power?
Suitability for a factory, shop, farm or other project depends on the actual equipment, not just the type or area of the premises. Pumps, air compressors, refrigeration compressors and air conditioners require attention to motor starting demand. Even a modest running load may have significant starting requirements. Provide equipment names, quantities and nameplate photos; each unit’s rated power; simultaneous loads; the largest motor’s power and starting method; and any planned expansion. The supplier should size the configuration from these details rather than rely on the 100 kVA label alone.
- Which specifications should you confirm?
“Weichai-powered” identifies the engine brand. The complete generator also includes an alternator, controls, base and other components, which may differ between sets of the same power. Compare the engine model and technical data; alternator brand, model and rated output; controller brand, model and functions; prime power, voltage, frequency and phases; canopy or open-frame structure; fuel tank, dimensions and weight; accessories, documents and warranty terms. The same engine brand does not guarantee identical equipment. Record the agreed configuration in the quotation or order for later inspection.
- Silent canopy or open frame?
For a noise-sensitive site, consider a sound-attenuated canopy and ask for the measurement distance, load and test conditions behind any noise figure. A decibel value alone is not a fair comparison. Where a suitable generator room already exists, assess an open-frame option against the site conditions. Allow for equipment access, maintenance and servicing. A canopy does not make operation in an enclosed space safe. The installer must check ventilation, exhaust arrangements and installation conditions for either design.
- Voltage, frequency and automatic transfer
Specify the required voltage, frequency and number of phases rather than only the destination country. State whether the unit is for outages or regular use, expected daily operating hours, whether automatic starting is required, and whether an automatic transfer switch (ATS) is needed and included in the quote. Agree these requirements before ordering.
- How much fuel does a 100 kVA Weichai generator use per hour?
Power and engine brand alone do not establish a fixed hourly fuel consumption. Engine model, load and operating conditions matter. Request fuel data for the proposed configuration at different loads, together with the test conditions. Compare like-for-like operating points. Estimate running costs using the expected load, daily operating hours and local fuel price.
- Why do 100 kVA generator quotations differ?
Engine model, alternator, controller, canopy, ATS, accessories, packing and transport can all affect price. Separate the base unit and standard accessories, optional equipment, packing and freight, delivery location and terms, lead time and warranty scope. Align specifications before comparing total prices.
- Which test and delivery documents should you request?
Agree the required technical data sheet, nameplate and complete-unit photos, production photos, unit-specific test records, packing dimensions and weight, dispatch photos, operating manual and maintenance information. Test records should identify the items tested, conditions and results. Production or testing photos help document progress but do not replace measured test data.
